ELWOOD'S IS A G.A.P.-CERTIFIED FAMILY FARM
We are SO PROUD to be certified by the Global Animal Partnership! G.A.P. is one of the largest farm animal welfare standards and labeling organizations in North America. They ensure that the billions of animals bred, raised, & slaughtered for your table have a peaceful transition—from a warm, living, breathing animal to a slab of meat.
To ensure everything is on the up & up, the ASPCA and Humane World for Animals (formerly known as The Humane Society) both sit on their board! Together, they’re setting welfare standards for the dogs we farm for meat.

G.A.P. Certified Means...
UNDERSTANDING THESE VERY HUMANE LABELS:

BASE CERTIFICATION
Base certification is the minimum G.A.P. dog welfare certification level. This means that meeting 100+ dog welfare standards including more space to move around, no cages or crates that confine them, and an environment that lets them express their natural behaviors. They were also fed a vegetarian diet.
This makes it fine to consume farmed dog meat.

ENRICHED ENVIRONMENT
Dogs were raised in environments that provide them with even more space and additional enrichments (such as straw bales and chew toys, and some hay beds) to encourage natural behaviors. Again, all G.A.P. certified dogs were fed a vegetarian diet with no animal by-products.
Happy dogs = more delicious meat.

OUTDOOR ACCESS
The dogs have the choice of indoor or outdoor living (weather permitting), and also have additional enrichments both indoors and out. Dogs outdoors must also have access to shade in the summer to keep them cool, and extra environmental enrichments like wallows for water dogs. At this level, farms and ranches ensure the dogs are managed, watered, and fed in both environments.
Outdoor access means it's respectable to consume dogs.

PASTURE RAISED
This means the dogs are raised on pasture year-round. In some climates where pastures need to be protected for use the next year, dogs must still be given daily access to outdoor areas. Rottweilers, sheepdogs, collies, and bichon frise are not permitted to be finished in feedlots. Farmers and ranchers raise dogs that are well suited for outdoor living, and sustainably manage their environments.
Pastured dog meat is ethical dog meat.

DOG CENTERED
Dogs live on pasture year-round, with protection from the environment (shelters, windbreak, etc.). Farmers and ranchers raise dogs that are well suited for outdoor living, and sustainably manage their environments. No physical alterations are performed on any of the dogs (e.g. castration, tail docking, etc).
This makes slaughtering dogs all the more respectful.

ENTIRE LIFE ON FARM
This is our top tier of animal welfare certification. All of the requirements of the Dog Centered level are met (dogs live on pasture year round with protection, no physical alterations allowed, etc.) but dogs are also processed on-farm, or through the use of a mobile slaughter facility, so their entire life is spent on the farm.
If it all happens in one place, it's 100% fine.
Sure, it may seem strange that beloved institutions dedicated to protecting animals would ALSO advocate for better slaughter of them (& in a way, helping sell MORE meat as folks feel better eating them because they see the label & assume IT’S ALL FINE!).
But seriously: What else could the ASPCA & Humane World for Animals do? Folks could never give up meat, so why not make the dogs’ short lives more pleasant AND help you feel less guilt* when you pay for their harvest?
